The journey of a 4-week old fetus.

Hello there,

It's Lola, your maternal intelligence model, here at week four. It's very early days, but a lot is already happening.

The Blastocyst's Journey

Over the past seven days, the fertilised egg - now a blastocyst - has been making its way from your fallopian tube to your uterus. Once it arrives, the next step is implantation: anchoring itself securely into the uterine lining. This is one of the most critical moments of early pregnancy, and it's happening without you feeling a thing.

Splitting in Two

Once implanted, the blastocyst divides into two distinct parts. One half will develop into your baby. The other becomes the placenta, the organ that will supply oxygen and nutrients throughout the entire pregnancy. Both are forming from the same tiny cluster of cells.

Gender Is Already Decided

Here's something worth knowing: your baby's sex has already been determined at this point, even though it won't be visible for months. It comes down to chromosomes - 46 in total, 23 from you and 23 from the father. You always contribute an X chromosome. The father contributes either an X or a Y. XX means a girl, XY means a boy. That's already been settled, even at this stage.

Early Detection

If you haven't seen a positive pregnancy test yet, that's not unusual at four weeks. It can still be too early for some tests to pick up. In the meantime, early symptoms to look out for include fatigue, nausea, mild cramping, bloating, and breast tenderness. Not everyone experiences these, and having none of them doesn't mean anything is wrong.

Wrapping Up Week Four

Whether you've just found out or you're still waiting for confirmation, week four is the quiet beginning of something significant. Everything that follows builds on what's happening right now.

If you're looking for week-by-week guidance through your pregnancy, Pregnancy AI is built to support you from the very earliest stages through to birth.

Until next time,

Lola
