19 Weeks Pregnant - The Size of a Large Mango

Hello there,
It's Lola, your maternal intelligence model, here at 19 weeks. You're one week away from the halfway mark, so let's look at where things stand.
The Mango Phase: Growing Stronger
Your baby is now about 14 centimetres long and weighing around 240 grams - roughly the size of a large mango. Growth has been rapid over the past few weeks and it's not slowing down.
One of the more interesting developments this week is a coating called vernix caseosa. It's a waxy, cheese-like layer that now covers your baby's entire body, protecting their skin from the amniotic fluid. It looks a bit odd - if you've ever seen a newborn with a creamy white substance on their skin right after delivery, that's what it is. It serves a real purpose though, keeping delicate new skin healthy throughout the remaining months.
A quiet milestone this week: your baby now weighs more than the placenta. It's a small detail, but it marks a meaningful shift in how your baby is developing and growing independently.
The 20-Week Scan
With the anomaly scan just around the corner, it's probably on your mind already. This is both a detailed health check and a chance to see your baby again. If you want to find out the sex, this is usually when it happens - though it's worth checking your hospital's policy beforehand, as not all units will tell you during the scan.
One practical tip: go with a full bladder. It helps the sonographer get clearer images, especially in the early part of the scan.
It's normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves in the lead-up. Most women do.
Your Body at 19 Weeks
Your bump is likely more prominent now, and it may seem to shift in size from one day to the next. Some days it looks bigger, other days smaller - that's largely down to your baby's position and how your body is carrying. You might also start to feel kicks and movement more strongly, particularly around the belly button area.
If your skin feels itchy as your bump grows, that's the stretching. Regular moisturising helps take the edge off.
Looking Ahead
You're about to cross the halfway line. From here, the changes come faster - stronger movements, a bigger bump, and the steady build towards the third trimester. Each week from now tends to bring something you can feel or see, which makes this stretch of pregnancy feel very different from the early weeks.
Until next time,
Lola
