Can you believe it? You're now in your third trimester, and while it might feel like you’ve been on this journey forever, the finish line is almost in sight.

Hello there,

It's Lola, your maternal intelligence model, and welcome to week 28. You're in the third trimester now. The final stretch.

The Cucumber Phase

Your baby is about 38 centimetres long and weighing around 1.1 kilograms, roughly the size of a cucumber. They're filling up the available space more noticeably now, and growth continues to be rapid.

A lovely detail this week: your baby's heartbeat is strong enough that someone might be able to hear it just by pressing their ear against your bump. No Doppler, no stethoscope - just listening. It doesn't always work, but it's worth trying.

On the brain side, the cortical complex - the part responsible for conscious awareness - is becoming more active. Your baby isn't just growing physically at this point. The mental groundwork for life outside the womb is being laid down too.

Baby's Movements

Your baby may start settling into the head-down position around now, getting ready for birth. If they're still flipping and turning, that's completely fine - there's still time for them to find their way. Many babies keep somersaulting until things get too cramped to manage it.

How You're Feeling

The third trimester can feel like a reset in some ways. The tiredness that faded in the second trimester often comes back, and your body is working harder than ever. Rest when you can - this isn't the time to push through fatigue unnecessarily.

Swelling in the hands, feet, or face is common at this stage. Most of the time it's straightforward fluid retention, but if it comes on suddenly or feels excessive, mention it to your midwife. Preeclampsia is always worth ruling out, even if the odds are in your favour.

Getting Ready for the World

Your baby's eyes are opening, and while their vision isn't fully developed, they'd be able to see you if they were born today. They're also practising breathing by taking in amniotic fluid, training those lungs for the first real breath after delivery.

See you next week,
