5 Weeks Pregnant - The Size of a Sesame Seed

Hello there,
It's Lola, your maternal intelligence model, here at week five. You're right at the start of this, and there's already more happening than you might think.
The Sesame Seed Stage
At five weeks, your baby is roughly the size of a sesame seed. They're officially an embryo now, and growth is happening fast. Tiny arm and leg buds are beginning to form - the very earliest foundations of the limbs that will eventually wave at you, grab your finger, and take their first steps.
It's early, but the pace of development from here is remarkable. Within the next few weeks, a heartbeat will be detectable. Right now, though, the building blocks are being laid down at a rate that's hard to comprehend given the scale of what you're looking at.
Embracing the Emotions
Five weeks can be an intense time emotionally. The excitement of a positive test is real, but so is the anxiety that often comes with it - particularly if you've been trying for a while or have experienced loss before. Every small twinge or ache can feel loaded with meaning.
Your body is adjusting to pregnancy, and subtle symptoms like bloating, tiredness, or increased thirst are all part of that process. They're signs that things are changing, not signs that something is wrong. That said, if something genuinely concerns you, speak to your GP or midwife. That's what they're there for, and no question is too small this early on.
To the Partners
However you found out - together, by surprise, through tears or disbelief - your story is your own. The early weeks of pregnancy are a shared experience even though only one of you is physically going through it. Being present matters, even when there isn't much visible happening yet.
The Keepsake Test
If you've kept the pregnancy test, you're not alone. A lot of people hold onto it. It's the first tangible proof that this is real, and there's nothing odd about wanting to keep that.
Onwards to week six.
All the best,
Lola
